Pressure Injury

What is a Pressure Injury (PI)?

A pressure injury, also called a bedsore, is an area of injured skin that happens when there is too much pressure on one spot for too long. These injuries can usually be prevented with the right care.

How Can I Help Prevent This Injury From Happening to My Child?

  • Check the skin. Regularly look at the skin, especially under any medical devices.

  • Reposition every 2 hours. Change your child's position at least every 2 hours to avoid putting pressure on one spot for too long.

  • Use the right support. Make sure your child is on a mattress and surface that helps reduce pressure. This might include special pads or cushions to protect bony areas.

  • Keep skin clean and dry. Always keep the skin clean and dry, including areas around devices like tracheostomies or tubes. Use moisture barrier creams to protect the skin.

  • Move medical devices. Change the position of things like pulse-ox probes every 6 hours to avoid pressure on the same area.
